The Clil4U (CLIL implementation with pools of resources for teachers, students, and pupils) project has during the EC co-funded period produced materials that will assist implementation of CLIL in primary schools and in vocational colleges through:
- 6 promotional videos showing CLIL used in classes
- 48 ready to use CLIL scenarios complete with instructions and materials
- Online collection of materials and commented links to resources
- Advisory materials to be used for including parents of primary school children in the CLIL process.
To prepare content and language teachers for implementation of CLIL the project has:
- Developed a teacher course on application of CLIL
- Developed online language courses for content teachers (to ensure the needed language level)
- Offered the content teachers a placement test and certification of language level according to CEF.
All outcomes are available in English. Manuals, promotional materials, and video subtitles are available in all the partnership languages.
Hundreds of teachers, pupils, and students have piloted the developed CLIL resources. Evaluations and feedback were fed back to the developers and resulted in improved versions of the project outcomes.
All outcomes are CopyLeft and may be used by any institution. The partnership teacher training institutions and associated partners continue offering pre-service and in-service courses after the project period.
The project needs were based on several reports, e.g. Eurydice “Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) at School in Europe 2006” which in “Factors inhibiting general implementation” points at a need for training language teachers in the special skills needed to provide CLIL through initial and in-service training programs devoted to methods used to teach a subject in other languages. The report also points at a need for teaching materials geared to CLIL in the target language that cover subjects in the national curriculum.
In “CLIL/EMILE in Europe”, the recommendations for extending good practice proposes to develop thematic CLIL modules that would also act as a means for developing teacher competence in CLIL.
CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is emerging across Europe where only six countries appear to be bystanders. In several countries, such as Malta and in parts of Spain, CLIL has been incorporated into the national curricula from primary schools to universities.
The project consortium represents different stages in the application of CLIL. The CY, CH, IT, and DK partners are in the process of implementing CLIL and have found an urgent need for better resources and CLIL teacher training.
The ES and MT partners have implemented CLIL in their teaching and also represent teacher training institutions that have offered CLIL in-service courses, but identified a need for freely available resources and for the development of a holistic competence based course on CLIL. Content and language teachers both need to learn how to apply constructivist based language teaching methods as part of their content/subject instructions – and there is a need for language level certification of the content teachers to ensure they have the needed language competences.
The CLIL Guidebook describes CLIL practice, advantages and basic theory and has case examples on how to implement CLIL in primary schools and vocational colleges.
The CLIL Guidebook is a handbook for subject and language teachers, especially those who are new to CLIL and who need some inspirational materials with ideas and advice on best ways to prepare colleagues, pupils/students, and parents/employers for the implementation.
The book is suitable for accompanying the CLIL teacher courses and to be used after these as inspirational materials and repetition of ideas.

The lesson explains how a diode can be used to convert AC into DC; how to keep a supply voltage stable; how to use a diode to indicate the presence of a voltage; how to use diodes to produce efficient light.

Students will be introduced to the electronics laboratory where practice in electronics is carried out. They will first become familiar with the safety requirements and practices to be followed, before being introduced to the basic tools and general equipment used in the electronics lab. Finally, they will have the opportunity to use this equipment in order to become familiar with it.

In the first half of 2015 the project produced six videos that show pupils/students learning a subject through a foreign language. The videos serve as demonstrator of six of the scenarios, but also act as promotion / awareness raising material for the CLIL method and motivation for learning foreign languages.
A collection of freely available online materials to be used for CLIL. The bank contains materials in all the project languages to serve CLIL based provision in the LWUTL. Materials in English may be dominant in existing websites, but the teams have made efforts to ensure that the bank is sufficient for implementation of CLIL in languages that are not mainstream.
The project has developed a CLIL course for content and language teachers. The course has three parts: A pre-course with a combination of language teaching and CLIL content, a CLIL course based on blended learning with a face to face course and online assignments, and followed by a post course, which deals with language certification according to the CEF.
This course was designed to help both content and language teachers learn about the CLIL approach to teaching. The course can be delivered in different combinations of face to face and online. The online part comprises ten modules, in each Module teachers will:
Discover an aspect of teaching through CLIL.
Download a Learning Diary where they will be asked to perform certain tasks and keep an electronic record of them - their e-portfolio.
Build up a framework of the components of a CLIL lesson in a Pre-Assignment Planning e-Record (PAPeR)
Reflect upon what they have learnt, to be able to discuss their experiences with other teachers on the CLIL4U course.
After completing the online component, participants will attend a 1 day F-2-F course, where they will:
Discuss any questions they had while doing the online course
Start planning their assignment – Designing a CLIL Lesson
The Teachers will continue to work on their assignment post-course.
After designing and delivering their lesson, they will be asked to reflect on the lesson, using a Guided Reflection form.
Participants will be encouraged to share their lessons online, and also share their reflection with other teachers on the course, using an online shared Corkboard.
Face-to-face course with CLIL introduction followed by online modules
The course starts with one day f2f workshop where participants learn about CLIL and meet exemplary examples of CLIL scenarios.
At the end of the f2f course the participants will get the assignment "design a CLIL based lesson" where they will document their ideas of the CLIL lesson in a Pre-Assignment Planning e-Record (PAPeR).
Following the f2f course the participants start designing a CLIL lesson aided by the ten online modules. When finished the participants mail the PAPeR to the course instructor for feedback.

During the course the instructor is available for answering questions and giving feedback to learning diaries. Communication will mainly be based on email and Skype.
The course staff will be one or more instructors from SDE College (DK), Kroggaardsskolen (DK), Spanish Confederation of Education and Training Centres (ES), Educational Excellence Corporation Ltd. On successful completion of the course the Clil4U consortium will issue a Course Certificate.

The English pre-course / language course is made up of 10 modules. The approach used on this language course attempts to allow teachers to experience CLIL for themselves.
Each Unit describes one aspect of CLIL. In this way, teachers will be reading about Content which is linked to the Language they will be learning and practicing.
1. Teachers first engage with a text about an aspect of CLIL. This has been placed in CLILStore (an online tool developed by TOOLS), where the text is linked to multiple dictionaries for ease of reading. There is also audio for each text.
The text for each Unit was especially written to highlight a particular language Point which would then be focused on later in the Unit.

2. Teachers then read a Language Focus, which tells them more about the language point covered in the Unit.
