Introduction to CLIL4U

The Clil4U (CLIL implementation with pools of resources for teachers, students, and pupils) project has during the EC co-funded period produced materials that will assist implementation of CLIL in primary schools and in vocational colleges through:
- 6 promotional videos showing CLIL used in classes
- 48 ready to use CLIL scenarios complete with instructions and materials
- Online collection of materials and commented links to resources
- Advisory materials to be used for including parents of primary school children in the CLIL process.

To prepare content and language teachers for implementation of CLIL the project has:
- Developed a teacher course on application of CLIL
- Developed online language courses for content teachers (to ensure the needed language level)
- Offered the content teachers a placement test and certification of language level according to CEF.

All outcomes are available in English. Manuals, promotional materials, and video subtitles are available in all the partnership languages.

Hundreds of teachers, pupils, and students have piloted the developed CLIL resources. Evaluations and feedback were fed back to the developers and resulted in improved versions of the project outcomes.

All outcomes are CopyLeft and may be used by any institution. The partnership teacher training institutions and associated partners continue offering pre-service and in-service courses after the project period.

Project background

PhyEmoC practice

The project needs were based on several reports, e.g. Eurydice “Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) at School in Europe 2006” which in “Factors inhibiting general implementation” points at a need for training language teachers in the special skills needed to provide CLIL through initial and in-service training programs devoted to methods used to teach a subject in other languages. The report also points at a need for teaching materials geared to CLIL in the target language that cover subjects in the national curriculum.

In “CLIL/EMILE in Europe”, the recommendations for extending good practice proposes to develop thematic CLIL modules that would also act as a means for developing teacher competence in CLIL.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is emerging across Europe where only six countries appear to be bystanders. In several countries, such as Malta and in parts of Spain, CLIL has been incorporated into the national curricula from primary schools to universities.

The project consortium represents different stages in the application of CLIL. The CY, CH, IT, and DK partners are in the process of implementing CLIL and have found an urgent need for better resources and CLIL teacher training.

The ES and MT partners have implemented CLIL in their teaching and also represent teacher training institutions that have offered CLIL in-service courses, but identified a need for freely available resources and for the development of a holistic competence based course on CLIL. Content and language teachers both need to learn how to apply constructivist based language teaching methods as part of their content/subject instructions – and there is a need for language level certification of the content teachers to ensure they have the needed language competences.

Manuals and guide

The CLIL Guidebook describes CLIL practice, advantages and basic theory and has case examples on how to implement CLIL in primary schools and vocational colleges.


The CLIL Guidebook is a handbook for subject and language teachers, especially those who are new to CLIL and who need some inspirational materials with ideas and advice on best ways to prepare colleagues, pupils/students, and parents/employers for the implementation.

The book is suitable for accompanying the CLIL teacher courses and to be used after these as inspirational materials and repetition of ideas.

Superheroes

In Superheroes children from language level A1 can learn about one of the four elements, they will be able to describe the characteristics of an element, and they will learn to make a hypothesis before an experiment. Soldering and printed circuit boards

Once an electronic circuit has been tested on the prototype board, it needs to be constructed in a permanent way on a printed circuit board. This lesson will introduce students to the techniques involved in soldering electronic components onto a printed circuit board. The Braking System

The scenario deals with describing a part of a modern car. The students will work on how to perform a simple procedure/reparation on that part. Language teaching resources suitable for CLIL

A collection of freely available online materials to be used for CLIL. The bank contains materials in all the project languages to serve CLIL based provision in the LWUTL. Materials in English may be dominant in existing websites, but the teams have made efforts to ensure that the bank is sufficient for implementation of CLIL in languages that are not mainstream.

Clil4U Courses

The project has developed a CLIL course for content and language teachers. The course has three parts: A pre-course with a combination of language teaching and CLIL content, a CLIL course based on blended learning with a face to face course and online assignments, and followed by a post course, which deals with language certification according to the CEF.

CLIL4U Course Guides

To assist you planning courses the Clil4U teams have compiled a course guide, which can be downloaded in the following languages:

 Main CLIL course and online assignments

This course was designed to help both content and language teachers learn about the CLIL approach to teaching. The course can be delivered in different combinations of face to face and online. The online part comprises ten modules, in each Module teachers will:

  1. Discover an aspect of teaching through CLIL.
  2. Download a Learning Diary where they will be asked to perform certain tasks and keep an electronic record of them - their e-portfolio.
  3. Build up a framework of the components of a CLIL lesson in a Pre-Assignment Planning e-Record (PAPeR)
  4. Reflect upon what they have learnt, to be able to discuss their experiences with other teachers on the CLIL4U course.

The three core options for the course are:

Online followed by face-to-face course

After completing the online component, participants will attend a 1 day F-2-F course, where they will:

  • Discuss any questions they had while doing the online course
  • Start planning their assignment – Designing a CLIL Lesson

The Teachers will continue to work on their assignment post-course.

After designing and delivering their lesson, they will be asked to reflect on the lesson, using a Guided Reflection form.

Participants will be encouraged to share their lessons online, and also share their reflection with other teachers on the course, using an online shared Corkboard.

Face-to-face course with CLIL introduction followed by online modules

The course starts with one day f2f workshop where participants learn about CLIL and meet exemplary examples of CLIL scenarios.

At the end of the f2f course the participants will get the assignment "design a CLIL based lesson" where they will document their ideas of the CLIL lesson in a Pre-Assignment Planning e-Record (PAPeR).

Following the f2f course the participants start designing a CLIL lesson aided by the ten online modules. When finished the participants mail the PAPeR to the course instructor for feedback.

The long distance version of the Clil4U course is designed to help CLIL teachers learn about the CLIL approach to teaching. 

During the course you will be asked to:

  1. Discover an aspect of teaching through CLIL.
  2. Download a Learning Diary where you will be asked to perform certain tasks and keep an electronic record of them - your e-portfolio.
  3. Build up a framework of the components of a CLIL lesson in a Pre-Assignment Planning e-Record (PAPeR).
  4. Reflect upon what you have learnt, to be able to discuss your experiences with other teachers.

To complete the course you need to work through ten online modules and for each module fill in a learning diary. The final part of the course is to prepare and submit a CLIL based lesson plan using the “Pre-assignment Planning e-Record”.  During the course the instructor is available for answering questions and giving feedback to learning diaries. Communication will mainly be based on email and Skype.

The course staff will be one or more instructors from SDE College (DK), Kroggaardsskolen (DK), Spanish Confederation of Education and Training Centres (ES), Educational Excellence Corporation Ltd. (CT), Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MT), Executive Training Institute (MT), University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (CH), and Istituto Comprensivo “Monte Grappa”- Bussero (IT).

On successful completion of the course the Clil4U consortium will issue a Course Certificate.

Pre-course / Language courses

The English Language Pre-course

The English pre-course / language course is made up of 10 modules. The approach used on this language course attempts to allow teachers to experience CLIL for themselves.

Each Unit describes one aspect of CLIL. In this way, teachers will be reading about Content which is linked to the Language they will be learning and practicing.

1. Teachers first engage with a text about an aspect of CLIL. This has been placed in CLILStore (an online tool developed by TOOLS), where the text is linked to multiple dictionaries for ease of reading. There is also audio for each text.
The text for each Unit was especially written to highlight a particular language Point which would then be focused on later in the Unit.

The first step is therefore:
Getting to know about CLIL whilst developing:

  • reading skills
  • listening skills
  • building up vocabulary
  • helping with pronunciation


2. Teachers then read a Language Focus, which tells them more about the language point covered in the Unit.
This aims to help content teachers understand an area of Grammar which they do not know much about.
This second step aims to develop Language Knowledge.

3. Teachers can then practice the language point using interactive exercises written and designed to consolidate understanding of the Language Focus and practice it.
This third step provides interactive practice with immediate feedback for teachers reading through the website. In this way, there is no need for any trainer input.

4. For further practice, there are also links to other websites where teachers can read more about the language point, or do further practice.

The course is suitable even for language teachers who wish to develop and practice the language.

If you follow our CLIL4U Main course, you will continue to develop your Reading and Vocabulary, and attendance on the Face-to-Face component of this course will ensure you get Speaking and Listening Practice.

September 2016

The SDE-Team has been invited to present the Clil4U results and run a course on CLIL at Aalborg Handelsskole as part of a conference for commercial colleges across Denmark. The workshop will take place on November 1st 2016.

The number of download of the CLIL Guidebook is increasing. This month we can also see the Greek version being downloaded an average of 56 timer per day (we can only see the top 30 downloads). Since Frebruary 2015 the total registered download of the CLIL Guide has passed 250,000. Download the CLIL Guidebook

The CLIL Guidebook was updated in June 2016 in all the language versions and in both formats. Please mail ka@sde.dk if you find links that do not work or have edit suggestions. Go to the Guidebook.

The Clil4U teams have worked through all the CLIL scenarios and most of them have been updated with new and working links. The CLIL Guidebook has also been updated so all links are valid and it now contains links to the six videos demonstrating use of the scenarios in primary schools and vocational colleges.

The teams met in Nicosia to finalize the project outcomes and ensure that the feedback from our users were implemented in the scenarios and in the CLIL course book. New versions of the course book will be available by the end of June.

The CLIL Guidebook has been downloaded 159,853 times (79,493 times in Italian, 54,214 times in English, 26,146 times in Spanish, the downloads per month for the Danish, Greek, and Maltese versions are not included as only downloads above 2,000 are registered in the website files). The ELT Council in Malta has approved the Clil4U course offered by ETI-Malta as valid CPD which can count towards CPD required for the renewal of EFL warrants. EFL teachers need at least 32 hours of CPD every 4 years. Download the course description.

September 2015

The long distance teacher course has been launched with 19 participants (registration closed on September 1st). David Marsh PhD has volunteered to answer questions from the participants about CLIL in the week from October 5th to 9th. David Marsh has worked on multilingualism & bilingual education since the 1980s. He was part of the team which conducted groundwork leading to the launch of the term CLIL in 1994. In 2002, he coordinated production of CLIL - The European Dimension: Actions, Trends and Foresight Potential for the European Commission (DG EAC). This overview of the situation in Europe was used in the compilation of the 2004-2006 EC Action Plan: Promoting Language Learning & Linguistic Diversity.

The project has developed a CLIL course for content and language teachers. The course has three parts: A pre-course with a combination of language teaching and CLIL content, a CLIL course based on blended learning starting with a face to face course and followed by online assignments, and a post course, which deals with language certification according to the CEF.

The project has finished the planned CLIL Guidebook, which is a handbook for subject and language teachers, especially those who are new to CLIL and who need some inspirational materials with ideas and advice on best ways to prepare colleagues, pupils/students, and parents/employers for the implementation. The online service developed by the TOOLS project is now wrongfully being accused of being a phishing site. The problem started with Google stamping the site as a phishing site and despite sereal mails to Google and request for a reviewGoogle is still labelling http://multidict.net/wordlink/ as a place of website forgery:-( Unfortunately several Clil4U scenarios make use of the http://multidict.net/wordlink/ services in worksheets for students. We hope to wake up Google and have the ban lifted. You can read our request here.

The project teams met in Malta for the 2nd project workshop, read the meeting minutes.

The teams have started compiling a collection of freely available online materials to be used for CLIL. The bank will have materials in all the project languages to serve CLIL based provision in the LWUTL. Materials in English may be dominant in existing websites, but the teams will strive to ensure that the bank will be sufficient for implementation of CLIL in languages that are not mainstream.

The project will in August be presented by William William Wernay Lynge with a presentation/paper at the "Think CLIL Conference": http://thinkclil2014.unive.it/en/index.php.

Three new scenarios have been put online with ready to use materials:

  • The Domotics (House Automation Systems) Module is suitable for students of level B1 and upwards, it is part of the vocational training of electricians, but it is also of value to other disciplines. Go to the Domotics scenario
  • The IHC Programming module is suitable for students of level A2 (absolute minimum) and upwards, it is part of the vocational training of electricians and deals with how to program and test an IHC DOMOTICS system. Students should have worked with the DOMITICS scenario prior to the IHC programming. Go to the IHC Programming scenario
  • The Web Page Task scenario makes use of "task based learning", the studentswill need to be at language level A2-B1 and upwards. The class will be divided into four groups, each group is given a task brief covering
    • How to get a free website with email accounts.
    • How to send files to the website using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Demands for netiquette (rules for proper email behaviour)
    • How to write a webpage using HTML and CSS coding
    • Where to get free graphics for your website including how to reduce the file size so the pages load quickly and the copyright rules for texts and graphics.

The Solar System targets pupils from level A1 with the aim to learn the names and some charasteristics of the planets that form the Solar System and to understand the Sun and the Earth as a part of  the Solar System: http://languages.dk/clil4u/scenarios/sc9/

We have uploaded a new scenario "Plants" for primary schools. The scenario will give the learners understanding of plants as living things. It will be an introduction to the parts of a plant and their functions: roots, leaf / leaves, stem and flower. One of the scenarios we are preparing in Clil4U is "Marketing". We have nowprepared an online sequence of units: http://multidict.net/cs/1603 The units are based on outcomes from a 1999 project, which is still very much in use:-)
